Anne Sherrill Benfield, 90 years of age, of Rutherford College, passed away on May 6, 2019.
A lifelong resident of Burke County, she was a loving wife, mother and friend to all who knew her. Anne was born April 10, 1929 to the late Annie Simpson Sherrill and Gamewell Parks Sherrill, Sr. She graduated from Montreat College High School and attended Meredith College and Appalachian State Teachers College. After raising her children, she joined her husband in his business (Benfield Theatres, Inc) working primarily at the Hickory Drive-In and Mr. B’s Fun Foods.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Kenneth Benfield, Sr. and her brother, Gamewell Parks Sherrill, Jr.
Anne is survived by her children: James Kenneth Benfield, Jr (Judy) of Black Mountain, NC; Cynthia Anne Benfield of Hickory, NC; Karen Benfield Jonakin of Chattanooga, TN; William Sherrill Benfield of Calabash, NC. Grandchildren: Laura, Jeremy, Brandon, Preston, Bristol, Annie and Carly; Great grandchildren: Sydney, Kenzie, Taylor, James, Aubrie and Millie. The family would also like to thank Janet Rasnake and Michelle Wellman, as well as Carolina Caring, for their support and dedication in providing loving care for Anne. Dr. Jamie Young provided Anne medical advice and care and is greatly appreciated. Anne had the help and support of a number of friends, nephews, and neighbors through the years. A special thanks to Butch Leger, Frances Barlowe, Chip Sherrill, and Dr. John Sherrill who were willing to help whenever asked.
Anne’s grace, smile, and humor and her indomitable spirit and deep love for her family are her legacy to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Graveside rites will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Burke Memorial Park Chapel.
