Benny Cecil Fox, Jr., 83, of Hildebran, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, January 2, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Fox was born in Catawba County on May 29, 1928 to Ben Fox, Sr. and Bessie (Roach) Fox, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Fox graduated from Lenoir Rhyne University and attended Appalachian State University for post-graduate studies. Mr. Fox taught both mathematics and science for 30 years at Gamewell and Hildebran. He led efforts to accredit Hildebran Junior High and was an officer in the Southern Association of Educators and a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators. Mr. Fox was always active in the communities in which he lived and worked, such as Parent Teacher Associations and teaching Sunday school. He was a member of Westview United Methodist Church in Hickory.
Mr. Fox will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. He also had a love of flying, having obtained a pilot's license while working at the Hickory Airport.
Besides his parents, those preceding him in death include his daughter, Cynthia (Fox) Dew, and his brother, Maurice Fox.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Katherine (Cline) Fox and his devoted son, Steve, both of Hildebran; his daughter, Denise Fox-Barber and her husband the Rev. Grant Barber and granddaughter, Kelsey, all of Scituate, MA; two brothers, Lloyd Fox of Hickory, Bruce Fox and his wife Earlene of Lincolnton; a sister, Ramona (Fox) Johnson of Hickory; and a sister-in-law, Lorene Fox of Hickory; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. Mr. Fox's ashes will be interred at the family's convenience at a later date. Friends will be received following the memorial service which will be officiated by Mr. Fox's son-in-law.
