David Paul Fox, 80, of Hickory, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC.
Paul was born November 25, 1932 in Alexander County to the late Lester and Eva Stikeleather Fox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John L. Fox, his sister, Helen F. Hefner, and his nephew, Todd Hefner.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City after which he began a 28 year career with Southern Railway. Upon retiring, he established Highland Wholesale Cars which combined his love of cars and racing. Paul enjoyed racing with his friends during his teenage years which led him to dirt track racing in area events and once raced at Daytona Motor Speedway in the 1960's. He also had a passion for flying and enjoyed owning a variety of planes and was also an avid lover of the game of golf. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hickory and The American Legion Post 48.
Paul is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rita, of the home; daughter, Stephanie Fox Moore and husband David of the Florida Keys; son, Bryan W. Fox and wife, Judy of Conover; grandson, Kyle B. Fox of Hickory and granddaughter, Meagan McMahan and husband David of Hickory; a brother, Larry D. Fox and wife Ruth of Taylorsville; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and long-time friend and co-worker, Rick Moore.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The service will be led by the Rev. James A. Moore of Douglasville, GA.
