Obituary

Debbie Elizabeth Cook Stratton, 62, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Carolina Caring.

Born December 22, 1956 in Cleveland County, N.C., she was the daughter of Leonia Hoyle Cook and the late Aaron Shannon Cook. In addition to her father, Debbie was preceded in death by her father-in-law, John A. Stratton, brother-in-law, Robert Stratton, and her nephew, Brandon Breckenridge.

A member of First United Methodist Church, Debbie served as a Sunday school teacher and on the finance committee. She started working in banking in 1980 at First Savings Bank and continued in the banking industry at People’s Bank. She was a longtime member of the Board of Realtors and won Associate of the Year several times. An avid cook and amazing hostess, Debbie was enthusiastic about everything she did. She was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved to have fun, be the life of the party, and she always lived life to the fullest.

Survived by her husband of 43 years, Thomas C. Stratton; a daughter, Ashley Stratton Wimbish and husband Nick of Taylorsville, NC; a granddaughter, Carly E. Wimbish; two siblings, Larry S. Cook and wife Marguerite of Hickory, NC., and Teresa Cook Davidson and husband James of Hickory, NC.; a nephew, Kyle Kinner of Washington, DC.; a niece, Sara Breckenridge Portis and husband Chris of Conover, NC.; a mother-in-law, Peggy M. Stratton; and a brother-in-law, Jack Stratton and wife Sara Jane.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, February 4, 2019, at First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Paul Christy and the Rev. Jennifer Forrester. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 3, 2019, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Carolina Caring, First United Methodist Church, Salvation Army, and the American Cancer Society.
