Obituary

Dorothy (Dot) Mitchell Moore, 91, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2019 in Greensboro, NC.

She was born March 10, 1928 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late William Sidney and Carrie King Mitchell. Dot grew up in Walnut Cove, NC, graduated from Walnut Cove High School in 1946, attended Women’s College in Greensboro and completed a two year course in office management at CVCC in Hickory. She married the love of her life, Kent “KC” Moore on March 28, 1953. She spent the next five years as the secretary for McCloud Leather and Belting Corp in Greensboro. After moving to Hickory, Dot worked as a secretary and a bookkeeper with Hutton and Bourbonnais, Concrete Material and Supply, Hickory Auto Parts and provided the same services for the Hickory Service League for 25 years. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She taught Sunday School, participated in Women’s Circle, the Sanctuary Guild, and loved watching over the babies in the nursery.

She was the best wife to her dear husband Kent and their three wonderful children. Dot was the engine of the family. She made their house function. Growing up in rural NC during the Depression, Dot became the most capable of women. She gardened, canned, cooked, sewed, and barbered. She could find the best bargain, perform all manner of house repair, and conserved and recycled long before terms were put to the actions. She did it all, and she did it well. She also had a beautiful singing voice and never refused a turn on the dance floor. Her hands were the hands of a hardworking girl who grew into a hardworking woman. Her overriding motivation was service to her community and family. It was that simple. She loved her family, her community and the people in it. She was a great Mom, a consummate friend and an even better wife.

In addition to her parents and her sisters and her infant brother, she was preceded in death by her husband Kent Clayton Moore.

Survivors include her children, Oceanographer Trent Clayton Moore and wife Christel of NC, Orthodontist Dr. Mark T. Moore and wife Jill of Greensboro, and Dr. Susan Moore and husband Dr. Andrew E. Geer of Charleston, SC; two grandsons, Garrett Clayton Moore and Carson Sidney Moore, both of Greensboro as well as many cousins, in-laws and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, Hickory with the Rev. Whit Malone officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 237 2nd St., NW, Hickory, NC, 28601 and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
