George Wesley Townsend, 93, of Hickory, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born on September 14, 1925 in Watauga County, he was the son of the late Cicero George Townsend and Ola Townsend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cannon Townsend, three brothers, and three sisters.

George served in the US army during WWII and was stationed in Europe. He received the Bronze Star and two Silver Stars. He worked as an electrician for the city of Hickory until his retirement. George was an outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing, and cutting wood. He lived a long and satisfying life.

Survivors include his son, Roger Townsend and wife Jackie of Hickory; a sister, Flo Townsend of Conover; sister-in-law, Lillian Leonard of Morganton, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 5, 2019, in the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Rev. Henry Rendleman. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM-1:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 3510 Main Ave. Dr. NW. Hickory, NC. 28601.

The Townsend family would like to thank Carolina Caring and Catawba Valley Medical Center for their loving and compassionate care not only for George, but also for his family.
