Goldie Mildred West Stewart Davis daughter of the late Frank and Effie West of Simpsonville born December 13, 1923 entered the presence of Christ on May 13th surrounded by family.
Goldie had a curious mind and a lifelong love of learning. She was a standout student at Simpsonville High School but had to delay higher education until later in life when she received a bachelor’s degree from Lander University and a master’s degree from the University of Georgia. She married her high-school friend, Connor Stewart and together had three sons (Mike, Mark and Chris). Goldie and Connor enjoyed their community and friends in Greenville and Greenwood. They were active members of John Knox Presbyterian Church, Bridge Club, and were avid supporters of their sons’ activities. Goldie retired as the Executive Director of the Greenwood Literacy Council where she empowered adults in their own education. It delighted her heart to serve her peers through teaching them to read.
After retiring, Goldie married and shared twenty-two years with Ed Davis. They enjoyed travelling domestically and abroad, old movies and each other’s quick wit. They were active members at Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood, SC. When at home in Greenwood, Goldie spent significant time researching genealogy and dedicating her attention to curating the diary of Rev. Clark Berry Stewart, of Fairview Presbyterian Church a family member who’s proletarian account of life in the 19th century has held the interest of several universities.
Her family knew her love notably through delicious meals, humor and hugs. She shared her pride in her family often and without reservation. Goldie moved to Pinecrest Retirement Community in Hickory, NC in 2014. Expert great- grandchild rocker and baby enthusiast - her presence will be missed.
Goldie is preceded in death by husbands Connor Stewart and Ed Davis, her parents Frank and Effie West, two sons Mark and Chris Stewart, granddaughter, Margaret Stewart, Siblings: Broadus West, who died at Pearl Harbor, Agnes Bradley, William West, Bernice West, Dorothy Armstrong, and Raymond West. Goldie often reminisced about her family with great affection and longed for their joyful reunion.
She is survived by son Mike Stewart and wife Judy of Hickory, NC; Grandson Anthony Stewart of Waynesville, NC; Granddaughters Grace Stewart (Benjamin Smith) and Anna Stewart of Red House WV; Grandson Michael Stewart (Lynette) of Deep Gap, NC and great-grandchildren Elijah and Lily Stewart.
Mike Stewart (son) and Anna Stewart (granddaughter) will lead the graveside memorial service on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the Simpsonville City Cemetery (SC). Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, NC and Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Simpsonville, SC. will provide arrangements.
