Helen B. Teague of Hickory, NC was born to Oscar and Florence Berger in Valley City, North Dakota on October 14, 1939. She died at home after a courageous battle with cancer on January 4, 2019 at 79 years of age.
Helen and husband Monroe M. Teague were married on July 14, 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hudson, NC. A Lutheran since childhood, Helen was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church of Hickory.
Helen was a Registered Nurse and a 1960 graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Forks, North Dakota. After working as an RN in Grand Forks, ND, she began her nursing career at Richard Baker Hospital (later Frye Regional Medical Center) in 1961. She was a staff RN, with experience in OB, Post Anesthesia Recovery, and later as Administrative Director of the Education Department.
In 1979 Helen graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in Nursing from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. She was the 1999 Employee of the Year at Frye, and in 2006 was recognized with the Administrative Director "Super Nova" award. She was an American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Instructor, and coordinated all AHA Life Support courses.
Helen was Past President and Board Member of Mu Alpha Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and subsequently served as Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary. She was a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association, and was Continuing Education Programs Reviewer and on the NCNA Safety Committee at Frye Regional Medical Center. She served on Coordinating Committees for CVCC, CCC&TI, WPCC and Lenoir — Rhyne College nursing programs. She retired in July, 2011 after 50 years of service at Frye.
Mrs. Teague was preceded in death by her parents, the late Oscar Berger and Florence Bommelnnan Berger Beglau, and brother, Richard Wayne Berger. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Monroe M. Teague of the home, two sons, Paul M. Teague (Diane) of Lenoir and Mark M. Teague (Marcellena) of Hickory. Also surviving are one sister, Beverly Nathan (Ted) of Humboldt, SD, and one brother Douglas Beglau (Marcia) of Cooperstown, ND.
Helen had a warm, generous personality, and she was loved and respected by all who knew her. She enjoyed playing golf and possessed a natural ability for the game. She enjoyed travelling with her husband and they traveled extensively throughout the United States. An avid hiker, she and Monroe hiked many trails together throughout the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains.
Helen was compassionately concerned with the welfare of others. She lived her life with the Golden Rule as her guide. Her two sons, Paul and Mark, were her pride and joy, and she loved them and her husband greatly. She will be deeply missed by her family and by the numerous friends who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at Bass-Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial gifts be made to the charity of one's choice.
