James Daughton (J.D.) Parker, 87, of Hickory, passed away, Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Catawba Regional Hospice.
Born October 1, 1930 in Alexander Co., he was the son of the late Elmer B. and Ida Mae Pierce Parker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alva Jean Gregory Parker; sister, Iva Lee Parker Yates; and brothers: Elmer Parker, Jr. and Billy Ray Parker.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, J.D. served during the Korean War. James had retired from Waldensian Bakery and later went on to cook for Pleaser’s Restaurant for over 10 years where he made many friends.
J.D. loved working in his yard and basically loved working all the time until his health declined.
He adored his grandsons, who in turn, adored him as well. He loved taking care of his wife Jean and dedicated his life to making her happy for 67 ½ years of marriage.
Survivors include his daughter, Brenda Joyce Parker Slater and husband Butch; sister, Catherine Parker Morgan; grandson, Kevin Slater and wife April; great- grandson, Brenden Slater and a step great-grandson, Jackson Williams, all of Hickory.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 - 11:00 AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
