Miles Phillips Powell, 80, of Hickory, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at his residence.
Born February 10, 1937 in Loris, SC, he was the son of the late Herman Wendell Powell and Madeline Phillips Powell.
Miles grew up in Mullins, SC, graduated from Mullins High School and Wofford College. He then attended Clemson University for several years.
In 1971 he moved to Hickory and worked for Hickory Printing Co. for many years as a Sales Management Executive.
Miles was also active in the community serving on the Board of the Catawba Science Center, Family Care Center, Catawba County Hospice and was a charter member of Lake Hickory Rotary Club, where he served as President and received a Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
He was also very active in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension and involved in almost every aspect of the church. He loved fishing and watching football, especially the Clemson Tigers. Miles was a kind and caring person and took great pride in his family and his community.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Farley Powell of the home; son, Miles Phillips Powell, II and wife Amy of Columbus, OH; three daughters: Gena Grahl Powell of Hickory, Melissa Powell Hylton of High Point, NC, Emily Powell Vaughn and husband Steven of High Point; granddaughters: Chloe Vaughn and Maddie Vaughn, both of High Point; and a grandson, Miles Phillips Powell, III of Columbus, OH.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension with the Rev. Karla Woggon officiating. Inurnment will be in the Church Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish Hall.
Memorials may be made in his honor to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension or Catawba Regional Hospice.
