Olive Moretz Radcliffe Kaylor
Olive Kaylor, who had been a resident of Kingston Residence since July 2008, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice, where she had been since September first.
She was born in the Meat Camp Community near Boone, NC on January 27, 1915.
To her five children, Alice, Doris, June, Jean and Jim, she was "Mama". To her ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, she was Mammaw, Nana, Bunna, and Grandma Lighting Bug. To her many Sunday School students at Bethany Lutheran Church and Westview United Methodist Church, she was the best Sunday School Teacher they ever had. She taught most of her adult life. She will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Kaylor held offices in the women's groups at both Westview and Bethany churches. She was chairperson of the Official Board at Westview United Methodist and served as chairperson of The Women of the Church at Bethany.
Always a gardener, Mrs. Kaylor loved to grow the flowers that the Green Thumb Garden Club arranged. She was known for her beautiful vegetable gardens and her love of growing flowers and vegetables.
Before residing at Kingston, Mrs. Kaylor lived on Seventh Street, Soutwest and was the chairperson and spokesperson for her community. She represented the Greenpark Neighborhood Association in its efforts to improve the beauty and safety of the area.
Noah Edward Moretz and Ada Winebarger Moretz of Watauga County, NC were her parents. Her siblings, who preceded her in death, were Edna Sigmon, Eleanor Newman, Dale Moretz, Ronder Moretz, Grace Cormandy, Lela Moretz and Nellie Smith. She was educated at Boone High School and Konnarock Lutheran Girls' School in Virginia.
She is preceded in death by her oldest child, Alice Radcliffe Campbell Betz. Her four surviving children are: Doris Radcliffe Hefner and husband Johnny of Greenville, SC, June Radcliffe Phillips and husband Jerry of Hickory, NC, Jean Radcliffe Richardson and husband Ray of Boone, NC, James Moretz Radcliffe of Concord, NC.
The service will be held in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2014 with Pastor Dan Duke of Bethany Lutheran officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Eastview Cemetery, Newton, NC.
