Rev. Phillip Ray Annas Sr. 73 of Granite Falls passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care Hudson with his soulmate, Catherine “Pat” Annas by his side.
Born August 29, 1945 in Caldwell Co. he was the son of the late Paris France Annas, and Ethel Mae Kirby Annas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Michael, Johnny, Dale; sisters Nancy, Martha, Linda; and one grandson Matthew Joseph Annas.
Upon graduating from GFHS in 1963 he moved to NYC to train in Linotype Machine operation. Afterwards he worked at newspapers in China Grove, Lincolnton and at the HDR. In 1968 he attended Gardner Webb College where he earned an Associate’s Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree in religion. In 1972 he attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned a Master’s Degree of Divinity. He taught English and Latin at Wake Forest - Rolesville High School from 1976 to 1986 where he also coached soccer and softball. From 1986 to 1989 he was an English instructor at NC State University while earning a Master’s Degree in literature. He spent the more recent part of his career working at Granite Falls Middle School teaching English and language arts, from 1989 to 1995, and Hibriten High School where he taught Latin and Yearbook from 1995 until his retirement in 2012. He pastored several churches in North and South Carolina during his years at seminary, from 1972 to 1976. Most recently he served as interim pastor to churches in the surrounding area of his home.
While living in Wake Forest he was a very active member of Glen Royal Baptist Church.
Recently he had been a faithful member of Poovey’s Grove before returning to his childhood church at Mt. Zion Baptist. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all whom had the privilege of meeting him.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Owen, Rev. Rick Crouse officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Granite Falls.
Survivors in addition to his wife Catherine “Pat” Auton Annas of 53 years; are his sons Phillip Ray Annas Jr. and wife Wendy, Kim Ray Annas and wife Andrea; three grandchildren Christopher, Meredith, and Samuel; and a number of nieces and nephews
