Shirley Deane Hefner, well-known native of Hickory, died September 27, 2017. She was born January 26, 1935 to Daldee W. Hefner and Violet Brown Hefner. She was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, Daldee W. Hefner, Jr.
Shirley was a lifelong member of Corinth Reformed Church. She earned her BS degree from Lenoir-Rhyne and her Master's Degree in Education from Appalachian State. She is remembered as a gifted student, as well as a gifted and beloved teacher. In order to care for her ailing parents, she took early retirement after 28 years of teaching in the Hickory City Schools.
After her parents died and her brother's death thirteen years ago, Shirley has made her home at Kingston Residence where she received excellent care.
Shirley is survived by her cousins and extended family members; Johnny Hefner, Betty Jo Burns, Suzanne Hefner, Rick Hefner, Bill Hefner, Shari Burns Abernathy, Eddie Burns, Clifford Parks, Patty Parks Shuford, Mickey Parks, Sally Parks Wright, Nancie Turner, Cindy Turner Evans, Lisa Turner Rothschild, Cliff Hefner, Leslie Hefner Davis, Jake Parks, Janie Parks Peake„ Scott Huss and Heather Huss McGilvra.
The Memorial Service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at two O'clock in the Althouse Room at Corinth Reformed Church.
Those wishing to honor Shirley's memory may make a contribution to Samaritan's Purse to aid the victims of the Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rican hurricanes.
