Elizabeth Townes McBride Rogers was born February 17th, 1922 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and passed away peacefully April 12, 2018 at Carillon Assisted Living of Newton, North Carolina.
She grew up on the Blantyre Plantation near Phillip, Mississippi with her brother, Blanton Duncan McBride (deceased), and parents, William Reid McBride and Mary Walker Duncan McBride (both deceased). Elizabeth graduated from high school in Minter City. The family later moved to Greenwood. She attended Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi before graduating from the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, Elizabeth enjoyed shooting hoops, and was a guard on the women’s intramural basketball team. She became a member of Chi Omega sorority. She majored in English, and graduated with a Teaching Degree.
She married her fighter pilot husband, the late Lt. Col. Thomas Eugene Rogers upon his return from the WW II Pacific Campaign. They raised their family on six different Air Force bases, including a stint overseas in Oslo, Norway.
Elizabeth was a devout member of the Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild and the Vestry in Clearwater, Florida at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. In North Carolina, she was a member of Saint Monica’s Circle and the Episcopal Church Women at the Hickory Episcopal Church of the Ascension.
Elizabeth was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
She and her late husband, Lt. Colonel Thomas Eugene Rogers, are survived by their four children: Lt. Colonel Thomas Eugene Rogers Jr., Mary Walker Rogers Greenwell, William McBride Rogers, Elizabeth Townes Rogers Wessels; two nephews: William Reid McBride and Charles Duncan McBride; nine grandchildren: John Thomas Rogers, Mary McBride Rogers, Benjamin Thomas Rogers, Laura Nicole Rogers, Elizabeth Walker Greenwell Landwehrw, William Thomas Greenwell, Robert August Wessels III, Charles Duncan Wessels (deceased), Thomas Rogers Wessels; and five great grandchildren: Jeffrey McBride Proffitt, Walker Hahn Rogers, Madison McBride Rogers, Thomas Blakely Rogers, Annabelle Kimberly Rogers (deceased).
Elizabeth’s service will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 726 1st Ave. NW, Hickory, NC 28601, at 11am, Saturday, May 19. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
