Virginia Cornelia Walsh Whisnant, 86, of Hickory, formerly of Lenoir, died Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Catawba Regional Hospice.
“Nook,” as she was known to friends and family, was born June 25, 1931, in Lenoir, to the late Henry B. and Florence Virginia McGee Walsh.
In 1949, she graduated, with honors, from Hudson High School. After graduating from King’s Business College in Charlotte in 1950, she worked at Broyhill Furniture Factories in Lenoir for 4 years. In 1951, she married Billy Leo Whisnant, son of Sanford and Lizzie Whisnant. She and her family relocated to her husband’s hometown of Hickory in 1955. There, she worked at Whisnant Hosiery Mills for 5 years and Nichols Hosiery Mill for 2 years. In 1965, she began working at Burke Hosiery Mills as the executive secretary. During her 33 years there, she became the office manager and held the office of Secretary for the company, retiring in 1998.
She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother, a longtime member of Bethany Lutheran Church, and a volunteer in the Hickory City Schools. Her interests included vegetable and flower gardening, feeding and watching the birds, raising poodles, and caring for her cats.
Her husband of 41 years, Billy Leo Whisnant, her siblings, Pauline McGee Oakley, Warren McGee, Margaret Walsh Williams, and Garland Walsh, and several nieces and nephews all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Diana Whisnant Earnest, of Hickory; her daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Kenneth Wilson, of Asheville; her grandsons, Thomas Earnest III, of Delaware, and Stewart Earnest, of Durham; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Wilson, of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
Receiving of friends will be held Monday, May 21, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m. with services to follow at 2:00 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Dr. C. Pierson Shaw, Jr. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
