Albert Randolph Abernathy, Sr., 88, of Hickory, passed away, Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.
Born March 28, 1930 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Edward Monroe Abernathy and Rosalia Abernethy Abernathy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Faye Ritchie Abernathy; brothers: Clyde, Ralph, Joe, Bill and Tommy Abernathy; two sisters: Violet Robinette and Aletha McCray; and a granddaughter, Alaina Nicole Abernathy.
A veteran of the US Air Force, Bert was a lifelong Christian and member of Penelope Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was recognized in 2016 as Deacon Emeritus. He was an outdoorsman and an avid beagler. When he was not at one of his son’s ball games, he was outside with his beagles.
He is survived by his two sons: Randy Abernathy and wife Dana of Cherryville, NC, Richie Abernathy and wife Pam of Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters: Audra Faye Boyd and husband Kevin of Charlotte, NC, Megan Morris and husband Bubba of Salisbury, NC; one brother, Jerry Abernathy of Connelly Springs; a great-granddaughter, Hatton Alaina Boyd; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018 at Penelope Baptist Church with the Rev. Nicholas King officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 10:30am-12:00 pm.
